Buena Vista is not a very commercial town and we stopped by one restaurant, viewed it's fried menu items and went down the street to Casa del Sol. It is a small place with three rooms serving somewhat traditional mexican food. There is a small courtyard that offers service in the warmer months. It is clean and brightly decorated. The food is good but not the best Mexican I've had. The price, $45.17 for two meals seems a bit high for the area and the food. Their salsa is fresh.

I know I know you should never base your meal decisions on random highway signs that boast that they are voted the #1 restaurant in the upcoming town, but my tummy was rumbling for some good Mexican food and I thought the food gods were looking down on me when I saw that now dreaded Casa Del Sol highway sign. I should have known that my experience at Casa Del Sol was headed into a fiery down word spiral when it took 5+ minutes for a staff member to even acknowledge that there were patrons waiting to be seated even though the same 3 staffers walked past us multiple times. After another 5+ minutes we were finally seated in a dingy room that had more clown figurines than a clown college. Once I got over the creepiness of the clowns and the strange behavior of the staff, I noticed that the lunch menu was very limited. The menu offered your standard tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc...nothing on the menu that would make Casa Del Sol stand above the rest or make it a gourmet meal. My hopes were still high that the food was #1 in Buena Vista. I been in other restaurants were the décor is a little off, the staff is a little different, but the food is what keeps you coming back (or posting a 5 star review on yelp). Unfortunately, that was not the case with Casa Del Sol. The food was just as wrong as everything else in the establishment. The small bowl of chips and salsa that they served were round Tostitos chips with a bland tomato type salsa (first bowl free additional bowls $2). My wife ordered the large taco platter that contained a single taco. The menu listed that the taco was prepared in a savory spice, but it was actually plain gross ground beef served in a stale Ortega taco shell that was totally unbreakable with a fork. The taco contained no lettuce or tomato only a huge pile of shredded cheese served on top of the taco not inside of the taco but actually on top of the taco if you laid it on its side (single taco plate $7ish). I had the lunch special that was a bowl of Pozole that honestly was straight from a can and not edible. Overall, Casa Del Sol was a weak attempt at Mexican food and the owner(s) should be ashamed to call this establishment fine gourmet dining. Word of advice to the owner of Casa Del Sol if your reading this post (who I believe is also the waitress) lose the nasty looking oven mitts from the 1960's that you use to serve the hot plates and allow your daughter to talk without repeating the canned speech that you prepared.

We pulled up in the parking lot of an adorable looking Mexican restaurant. Don't let the exterior fool you; inside it is dark and full of creepy little clowns that sit on every surface available. Their sign claims: "Mexican food with a gourmet twist". What did they mean by gourmet? A weird tasting meatball sitting in the bottom of salty beef broth and a small plate with iceberg lettuce on top served with watered down ranch dressing. I figured out the soup and salad were the gourmet twist after I ate my disgusting Mexcan entree. Although, the stranger's lip stick print on my glass might have also been their idea of gourmet. The hostess gave me a clueless look when I asked her to exchange my glass. My boyfriend's entree had some type of burnt red sauce. Although it didn't appear to be edible, we took a bite and realized our eyes were correct. The waitress argued with us as she explained it was their specialty. Specialty?! What about the white cheesy... um enchalada that I ordered? Not good, but it wasn't burnt and slightly edible so we shared my plate and tried not to bust out with laughter when the rude server asked us if we wanted dessert.

Not sure I can say more that hasn't already been said, but this place was a total waste of our time and money. I was surprised by the small menu, clueless wait staff, and Tostitos chips, but thought that some of what was listed sounded really authentic, so remained hopeful for our entrees. Boo! I had the flat enchiladas with spicy chili con carne. The flavor and spice level in the sauce was good, but it was COMPLETELY without seasoning--no salt in it at all. Wow...gross. The meat was also poor quality. My husband had the "pechuga(?) suiza" which amounted to a Monterey Jack and chicken quesadilla. I've cooked "suiza" style Mexican food at home, so knew what to expect, but he was extremely disappointed. I will say the green chile was tangy and good, but that was all. We had to ask for our drinks to be refilled about four times--even though there were a bunch of teenagers kind of hanging around the place, we got terrible service, and were there for about 2 hours with two small kids. And everything on the menu cost about twice as much as it should have. Wish we'd checked Yelp first and avoided this place!

Can't really say anything that hasn't already been said. I think Todd H says it best and mirrors our experience almost exactly. Long story short: This place is simply awful. Not just the worst "Mexican" food I've ever had, but potentially the worst restaurant of any kind I've ever had the displeasure of eating in. How this place has survived is beyond comprehension.

When I go home to visit my family, Casa Del Sol is a must for me to eat at! The service is great and the food is amazing! I love the salsa so fresh and just the right spice! Whenever our order goes in the chef knows it must be our family and always comes out to say hello! If you want some true Mexican food I suggest you stop in and try this great restaurant! A mango margarita is a must!!

Where do I start? First of all, I've eaten here three times over ten years. Each time, I remember walking out disappointed, but after a few years, there's that voice inside that says, "Come on, the place has been in business for 30 or 40 years... they have to be doing something right!" And then I go, and I walk out sooooo disappointed again. After the last time, I've swore to myself that I'll never go back. Awful. Just awful. Don't be fooled by signs saying this place is "gourmet." I read every previous review and it brought back many memories: -The store-bought Tostitos chips -The odd chili relleno which was a square cut from a casserole -The soup which had one small meatball in it -The cheese that's strangely placed on the SIDE of the taco shell Just don't go.

Being the only patrons in the place should have been the first indication to move on down the road for authentic Mexican food. Everything was from a can, box, or defrosted. The highlight of our meals was the buzz we got from our terrible margaritas. Starving fisherman complaining about food is a rare thing. I'm just encouraged that the four of us didn't get food poisoning. Check yelp before eating here: to our disappointment we only looked after.

Worst Mexican food ever! Gross sauces, taco meat, chili rellenos! The chicken in the chicken enchilada looked like processed soy and tasted like rotten cheese. When the waitress noticed we had only taken one bit off each item on our plates she told us she could "take a little off the bill" So we asked for the manager...had to wait at least 10 mins, when he came to the table he seemed amazed that we were unhappy "Wow we have never had a complaint before...you must have been expecting different Mexican food" Yeah buddy the real kind! From reading the other reviews I know they have had a complaint before. DON'T EAT HERE there is plenty of great restaurants in Buena Vista

Ummm, this is not gourmet Mexican food. The (very) limited menu for lunch has maybe 15 items on it, normal stuff you could find in any Mexican restaurant. The ceilings are low, the place is dark and you feel closed in. Anyway, to start the waitress brought out Tostitos and Pace salsa. At least that's what it reminded of (and looked like). I had some kind of burrito that was stuffed with shredded chicken, onions and Monterrey Jack cheese, then fried (like a chimichanga) then baked with more cheese on it and topped with green sauce (for those who like it hot, said the menu). Well, the green sauce wasn't hot. The plate was served with standard rice and beans. Save yourself some time and pass this place by.

Well I wasn't able to get a solid internet connection before visiting Casa Del Sol...otherwise I would've seen the reviews and eaten elsewhere. The queso (I think they call it "Nacho Dip") was good but everything else was mediocre. My enchilada was burned and had a bland taste to it. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I absolutely agree with all previous reviews. Worst Mexican food we have ever had! Service is pretty good but food is NOT! I have given the place two tries and I stand by my review. A previous review describes their soup as rocky mtn oyster in beef broth, that is exactly what my boyfriend said at the dinner table!

Passing through Buena Vista and hungry for dinner, we spied Casa Del Sol (ooh, Gourmet Mexican Cuisine!) and decided to give it a shot. The truly clueless tweenage staff seemed astonished to see real live customers [bad sign #1], and it took them an awkward moment to figure-out how to get us to a table in their courtyard. The menu looked OK -- your normal tex-mex fare, though overpriced -- and we soon ordered. My wife and I split a combination platter, and our daughter ordered a cheese enchilada plate. While we waited for our food, we dug into the chips and salsa that had arrived. The chips were obviously store-bought, but we enjoyed the salsa ... yet it seemed oddly familiar. Shortly, we realized that it was the same stuff we sometimes buy from Costco! [bad sign #2] The soup included with our combo platter soon arrived. Actually, 'soup' is too strong a word. This was unimproved canned beef stock with a meatball squatting in the bowl. The meatball wasn't horrible, but the weak, dingy, metallic-tasting broth? WTF! [bad sign #3]. Then another tween brought our salad, a scant handful of prebagged iceberg lettuce mix with the thoughtful addition of a hard little cherry tomato and a few corporate croutons. The menu indicated that the salad would feature their 'special dressing.' I'm pretty sure that their 'special dressing' is none other than that Wishbone crap you mix from a packet. [bad sign #4]. At this point, dear reader, it finally began to sink-in that something was amiss. I whipped-out my iPhone and consulted Yelp. Oh, dear, a unanimous 1-star rating. I read Kendra S.'s review and burst out in nervous laughter, realizing the awful truth that we were in for a 'remarkable' meal. In a restaurant full of clowns. Soon, our plates arrived hot out of the broiler. Really hot. But, because these geniuses had added sour cream BEFORE the broiler treatment, it had congealed and developed little shrinkage cracks along the edges, turning it from the cool, refreshing counterpoint that it provides to intense foods into a warm, unappealing mass of sorrow and regret. The taco on our platter, as Orlando L. also noted, had its cheese on the outside, a 'gourmet' twist, no doubt, that helped turn the stale off-the-shelf Ortega taco shell limp and pathetic. Inside sat a portion of indifferent bland hamburger. Some taco. My daughter's enchilada was a freak show of shiny, glaringly white cheese. The enchilada sauce, which she wisely ordered on the side, was nothing more than scorched mild chili powder and water. Even the refried beans were gross and obviously straight from a can. Oh, I could go on, but you get the picture. To help heal from the emotional damage that this meal caused us, I've isolated a few Rules to Live By so that this doesn't happen again: 1. To find good Mexican food, start in a town that has Mexicans. Buena Vista is pronounced 'BOONA vista' by the locals and in-the-know stoner nonlocals, even though this flies in the face of the Spanish language. A town with a flagrantly mispronounced Mexican name can't possibly enjoy a thriving Mexican community. No Mexicans means no Mexican cooks. And that means el crappo Mexican food. QED. 2. The presence of clowns as a decorating theme is simply incompatible with gustatory delight. As is so often true in life, if you see clowns, just walk away. 3. A wait staff comprised mainly of adolescents: Another Very Bad Sign. 4. Yelp exists for a reason. Why, oh why, didn't I check it before we walked in?

We've eaten here before and had a fairly good meal, but after this last meal, we won't be back. I ordered the Chicken Mole and I could smell clove as soon as the waitress served it. The rice had a metallic taste and beans were not good, so I hardly ate any of my meal. Overpriced and you can't order a la carte items.

This looked like a quaint little restaurant with "local flavor", so we were looking forward to a tasty meal. Like other reviewers, I feel the food was a disappointment. I went in craving carne asada. To my surprise, there was no carne asada or fajitas on the menu. It was all enchiladas, quesadillas and so on. I ordered a combo plate with a beef enchilada, a taco and chile relleno. The enchilada and taco were filled with unseasoned ground beef. The "chili relleno" was a square cut from a pan of chili relleno casserole. The refried beans were fair. They did have a couple of house menu items - my daughter ordered a chili shrimp dish which was fair at best, and, not surprisingly, came with plain white rice vs. seasoned mexican rice. The hot fudge sundae was the highlight of our meal. Too bad - Buena Vista is a pretty little town, but unfortunately, Casa Del Sol doesn't contribute much to BV's charm.

I have to disagree with some of the other reviews. My fresh mushroom enchilada was excellent and the queso was as well. I'll come back.

Very bland food. It's a cute little place with a nice ambiance and great patio to hang out on. The margaritas were strong and tasty. Downhill after that. It took nearly forever to make 6 plates of tacos and enchiladas. The beef was the most bland tasting beef ever. No taco seasoning at all. I've had better $1 tacos at bars. Enchiladas weren't much better. All this place needs to do is put some effort into the food and it would change my 2 to 5-star.

Worst Mexican restaurant ever. Where do I even start... When we were seated, we were informed by the hostess that service will be very slow due to the fact that there was only one waitress and they were full for lunch. The lunch menu was so small, you basically get a burrito, a rellano, a taco or an enchilada. The chips and salsa you get to feast on while you wait a lifetime for your food, were basically tostinos, I swear they straight opened a bag and a can, and were served by a very sarcastic 14yr old looking kid who looked like he just got jumped. Our waitress when we finally saw her, apologized because in addition to her being the only waitress, it was her first day waitressing, and she was making all the mixed drinks. She was running the entire freaking restaurant by herself! She was the only reason we didn't take off running, we felt bad for her. Then we got the food, oh dear God the food.... Keep in mind the prices for lunch were $10 and up, nothing cheap here, apps are the same as the meals. Anywho, like I was saying, the food was Terrible! My "rellano" was a piece of green chilli the size of a post-it note, sandwiched between globs off cheese. Not battered and fried! And a small scoup of beans, all for the lovely price of $13! My husband got the beef burrito, oh boy... Hamburger meat wrapped in tortilla, that's about it! So bad... Then the side of green chili he requested to try to choke it down, was a globby tasteless and Lardy looking slop, I have never seen green chili look like slime! So bad... All I got to say is don't do it. Go to Taco Bell, it's better than this "authentic" Mexican restaurant. Wow.

For the last 16 years, I've flown to Colorado to climb the 14ers. At least 1/2 the time, we've gone through Buena Vista. When you come down from a week camping, eating freeze dried food, you build up a mighty hunger. Often that hunger can be quenched with a solid Mexican meal. The first time we rolled in here, we couldn't pass up the irresitable sun sign on the highway. I walked away feeling cheated and ripped off. Two years later, one of my friends wanted to try it again and was treating. We went back and nothing had changed. This year, we met two campers who had been out for a week and asked if we knew anything about Casa Del Sol. We warned them that it was expensive and the food poor. They asked if we equated poor with mediocre, and we both stressed that they simply shouldn't even bother to try it.

One of the best Mexican Restaurants I have been to. Ingredients are fresh and well prepared. Atmosphere is similar to being at someone's home. Service is attentive and helpful. Even the background music is good relaxing guitar. They could call this place "Ottmar Liebert". Easy walk to downtown, with spectacular views of the Collegiate Range. This place has been around since the 1970s nd has always been good. I consider it a destination itself

Walked in with four picky kids and we had a great meal. Tacos great, salsa excellent make sure you have the guacamole. All at a great price for a family of six. Great atmosphere looks like it has been in town forever. Would have been five stars but green chili not so hot but everything else great

Oh man.... let me see if I can help these guys out a little bit. They certainly don't deserve 1-1/2 stars. We stopped here after a long weekend of 4WD/camping fun, craving a good margarita and warm lunch. When we walked in we were pleased with the ambiance. Definitely a small little place but cozy and intimate, particularly in the front seating area. We thought it odd they were packing everyone together in the back room (which was too compact for my liking) but I think it was because they were going to be closing within the hour. We didn't realize that and asked to be moved to the front. They obliged and never mentioned that we were arriving at the tail-end of their business hours (it was a Sunday and we arrived around 1:30 p.m.) The entrees we ordered were quite good: chili rellenos (Christmas style) and stacked enchiladas. The waitress warned me the enchiladas were VERY spicy but I was ready to be lit up so I told her I was fine with it. Unfortunately my "spicy enchiladas" were anything but (which was a bit disappointing). In fact I think the cook may have even neglected to put ANY spice in. The best part of the meal was the margs - one salt on the rocks and one blended. When I asked the waitress to "make it really good" she did. I could definitely taste the tequila but it wasn't overwhelming. Just right! I guess where this restaurant goes wrong is that the service is really slow. We got lucky and our meals came out pretty quick but others around us waited awhile. And, unfortunately, my marg was gone within about 10 minutes of it landing on the table and I really was hoping to have another. However, the waitress was so preoccupied with the other tables that once she delivered our lunch she never came back to find out how they were, if we wanted another drink, or needed anything. So I finished my meal and was totally over wanting another drink. Bottom line: I would certainly come back here for lunch and margs but I would expect slower than usual service. Important takeaways: food is quite good, margs are really good, service is slow but friendly, circular tables are irritating (you can't put your legs under the table and have to sit sideways or straddled), and the food is somewhat pricy. I saw no clowns which another reviewer mentioned. That's a really good thing because I hate clowns and that would change this 3 stars to 1. Givem' a try. I think this was better than the nearby mainstream / very average Coyote Cantina.

Just ate there this evening, unfortunately. This was our second time there and will definitely be our last. The food is mostly very bad, but some of it was OK. The service is odd -- hard to describe... just not anything like what you would expect, and not in a good way. Our orders were wrong, service was slow, and the enchiladas were horrible. Tacos were OK. Soup was good. Hot chocolate is very good. Guacamole was OK, but too salty. Chips are store bought. Rum cake was poorly made and had no flavor -- very bland. As I said, we will never eat there again.

Casa Del Sol was mediocre but nothing to write home about. I went there for dinner with a majority of my family and thought it was alright for a small town Mexican restaurant. I found the decor to be a little bit tacky but quaint in a way that made the restaurant special. The service was a little slow but the staff were very nice, although they did slip up once on the orders. We got chips and salsa for an appetizer which were fine and the guacamole was great although it took a long time to come out. I got the pechuga suiza which was pretty bad but the meatball soup that came with it was fantastic. My siblings got the quesadilla and the Santa Fe enchilada and both that their respective dinners were pretty good. Another family member got the chicken enchiladas and thought they were good as well. Although I really disliked the pechuga suiza, I confess that I am a Californian and as such, am blessed with really great Mexican food. So I guess in a way I am a Mexican food elitist. That being said, Coyote Cantina, fewer than 10 minutes away, is a much better option. I would consider coming back but I would definitely stay away from the pechuga suiza. Overall, Casa Del Sol was not great but it wasn't as horrible as other people make it out to be.

I will never go back again. Absolutely horrible food and poor service. It says they have been open for 40 years.....how? They brought us chips and salsa, they was OK. They don't offer hot salsa, which I find weird. I ordered the number 1 combo platter. It comes with a taco, enchilada, and something else I couldn't stomach. The sauce on the enchilada was horrible, didn't have a good flavor and tasted burnt. I couldn't pick up the taco, it fell apart because the shell was stale. I'm a big guy and I didn't eat my food....that says something. I could go on and on, but I don't want to waste my time or yours. My wife ordered the number 8, crab enchiladas. That was mediocre at best. My daughter ordered a beef burrito... Beef not seasoned and pretty flavorless and skimped on the cheese. We also ordered the nacho cheese sauce, pretty sure that came out of a can. I told the waitress I didn't like the food and all she did was say sorry. She could have offered me something else or a discount on the bill.....dumb and rude. Worst $50 I've ever spent!

We had lunch here traveling back to Denver. Service a little slow, restaurant a bit quirky. Small menu selections. Kids liked their quesadillas, the beef taco was fine. Chili relleno was not the best but not the worst. Seafood enchiladas kind of small - but lets face it- it is Buena Vista, people. Not exactly a metropolis. Outdoor courtyard was the best part. It had covers over the tables to shield from the sun or in the unlikely case of rain. Beatiful fountain in the center was pleasantly running and made the so-so food quality more bearable. Wait staff was attentive and was kind enough to provide coloring paper for the kids. Chips were out of a bag, but waitres said salsa was made in house (and it tasted like it). It was good.

The reviews of this place mirror what I have always thought... As a Buena Vista native, I have eaten here 3 times and that's 3 too many. I have always wondered how this place has managed to stay in business for, at least 30+ years. I vaguely remember going here once as a kid, I don't really remember much besides hearing how especially horrible the food was for the next dozen or so years of my life and that was enough for me to never go back, until... After being away from Buena Vista for the better part of a decade I decided to move back. And one night a couple of friends and I were going to go out to dinner, and for some un-godly reason one of them desperately wanted to go here (it is a mystery to me, but there apparently are people who actually LIKE the food here). I agreed to eat there, albeit with some trepidation. I ordered a veggie quesadilla, because you cannot possibly ruin something so simple as a quesadilla, right? WRONG, dead wrong! The only way to really describe what they brought me is a plate of grease with quesadilla ingredients floating in it. That was enough for me to swear I'd never eat there again no matter who begged or pleaded, I stuck to that until this week... It just so happens that one of my friends works at Casa Del Sol, and I'm sure that with the best intentions, he brought me some take-out after he got off work one night. The food was not quite as terrible as I remembered it being, but I attribute that to the fact that I was on my 3rd or 4th drink when he showed up, not them improving their food. I had chicken enchiladas with green chili, the chicken obviously comes from a can, straight from a can, no seasoning it or doing anything to make it seem like it's anything other than canned chicken. The Green Chili is a little tangy but overall is unimpressive and bland there's no spice or heat or flavor besides the tang that I assume comes from tomatillos (and in general I'm not a fan of putting tomatillos in green chili).

The Quest continues for a Good Mexican Restaurant in Buena Vista... Sunday Afternoon passing through....Waitresses couldnt decide who was waiting our table....No menus were initially provided- so we asked for them. Then the Waitresses continually got mixed up.....The courtyard is cool yet indoors, the air handling system was weak and dank.

I am absolutely astounded that this place has survived for years and years - possibly even decades. I think the only possible explanation is that it is on the main drag, looks quaint and cute, and has a never ending stream of new and gullible tourists each year to take money from. Don't be fooled by the line outside the door during the summer - the people waiting just don't know any better - or like us they think it can't be as bad as the first two or three times they went. We tried this place on 3 or 4 occasions and these people (and it seems to be a family run place - which I usually like) are completely clueless - and the food is really odd and not in a good way. Recommend you stay away.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
